WATCH: Why Choose an AACS Certified Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship?

There are currently no residency programs in the U.S. devoted exclusively to cosmetic surgery. Existing residency programs in general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, and other specialties, do not include adequate training to perform the vast array of cosmetic surgery procedures.

Recognizing this void, AACS encouraged creation of and now certifies post‐residency Cosmetic Surgery Fellowships in General Cosmetic Surgery and Facial Cosmetic Surgery.

Two Types of AACS Certified Cosmetic Surgery Fellowships

General Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship

A fellowship in general cosmetic surgery is a post‐residency program involving advanced education and training in the art of cosmetic surgery.

Training fellows participate as primary surgeon or direct assistant in 300 or more cosmetic surgery procedures involving the body and extremities, breast, and skin, as well as non-surgical cosmetic procedures like Botox and fillers.

Facial Cosmetic Surgery Fellowships

A fellowship in facial cosmetic surgery is a post-residency program involving advanced education and training in the art of facial cosmetic surgery.

Training fellows participate as primary surgeon or direct assistant in 125 or more major facial cosmetic procedures, including blepharoplasty, rhytidectomy, and rhinoplasty, as well as procedures like brow lifts, skin resurfacing, liposuction, chemical peel, hair transplantation, fat transfer, and facial implants, among others.

  • Instruction in the basic sciences, anatomy, anesthesia, ethics, pre-and postoperative management, surgical technique, wound healing, laboratory technique. medicolegal and regulatory issues, and quality assurance should be included in the curriculum

"If you are passionate about the field of cosmetic surgery...

I highly recommend an AACS fellowship to get the most comprehensive educational experience. Not only did I gain these valuable skills, but I was also equipped with the knowledge and experience that allowed me to operate my own cosmetic surgery practice directly out of fellowship."

- Dr. Jessica West
