The AACS in 2015 - A Return to Prominence in Education and Training
It has been a month since our 31st Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans and the early feedback from the membership has been excellent. Thank you for taking the time to complete our CE and meeting surveys. Your comments and suggestions will be used to make improvements for next year's meeting in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Bob Shumway and his annual meeting committee are already planning the events and will present the preliminary program agenda shortly.
I would like to sincerely thank our 2014 President, Dr. Jane Petro, for her wisdom and leadership through a very difficult transition year at the Academy. She has positioned us to experience growth and prosperity going forward. Outstanding service, Dr. Petro, a job well done!
I would also like to recognize the annual meeting committee members who dedicated tireless time and effort to bring us the best and brightest speakers for the New Orleans meeting. The following subject matter experts delivered outstanding educational sessions in their chosen fields and have my sincere gratitude: Ryan Greene, MD; Suzan Obagi, MD; Sabrina Fabi, MD; Bob Shumway, MD; Marc Cohen, MD; Julie Woodward, MD; Marco Pelosi III, MD; Marco Barusco, MD; Chad Deal, MD; Elie Ferneini, MD, DMD; and Jennifer Deal.
This was our first annual meeting administrated by an association management company. Sentergroup did an outstanding job delivering a highly professional, efficient and organized meeting. The Academy is very fortunate to have Sentergroup as our management team and, under their guidance and supervision, the Academy has already grown in membership, revenue and in educational offerings to our membership.
As part of the Sentergroup management contract, we have hired the Academy's new Executive Director, Daniel Garrett. Dan will begin his full-time employment with Sentergroup, as the dedicated AACS Executive Director, later this month. He brings tremendous experience, energy, and a "can do" attitude to our organization. Please introduce yourself to Dan at your next opportunity and welcome him to the AACS family.
The Academy's Education Committee has been working hard on developing several cosmetic surgery workshops for 2015. Three of these workshops are already open for registration, so reserve your spot early as space is extremely limited at these one-of-a-kind events:
- The Art of Fat Grafting for Facial Rejuvenation and Body Contouring, May 15-17, with Carey Nease, MD, and Chad Deal, MD, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
- Enhanced Facial Rejuvenation, June 12-13, with Angelo Cuzalina, DDS, and Joe Niamtu III, DMD, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- Liposuction, Fat Grafting and New Lipoabdominoplasty Techniques, Oct. 16-17, with Marco Pelosi II, MD, and Marco Pelosi III, MD, in Bayonne, New Jersey.
- Workshops on breast; body contouring after massive weight loss; and non-invasive rejuvenation (in development)
The AACS has re-instated facial cosmetic surgery fellowship training and the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery has developed a certifying exam for facial cosmetic surgeons who would like to challenge the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery through either the experience or fellowship route. If any of our members would like to start a facial cosmetic surgery fellowship accredited by the AACS, please contact Margaret Bengtson at the AACS headquarters for the requirements and structure of the fellowship. The AACS facial fellowship committee chairman is Dr. Faisal Quereshy, who can also be a resource for questions regarding facial fellowship training.
If there are any members who are interested in starting a general cosmetic surgery fellowship that encompasses facial, body, breast, extremity and dermatologic surgery, please also contact Margaret Bengtson at the AACS or Dr. Mark Mandell-Brown, who serves as the general cosmetic surgery fellowship chairman.
As I hope you can now see, or will come to see as the year progresses, the AACS has returned to its origins as the premier organization for cosmetic surgery training and education. We are now fully staffed with an outstanding executive committee and board of trustees, a professional management company and an executive director. We have embarked on a strategic plan that will raise the Academy to heights we have never seen and position the AACS as the industry leader in the specialty of cosmetic medicine and surgery.
I am very excited about the direction the Academy is taking and encourage any members interested in serving on committees or assuming leadership positions to help steer the organization, to contact me or any of the board of trustees and we can make it happen.
Michael J. Will, MD, DDS, FACS
