Moving the Academy Forward with a New Strategic Plan
The AACS leadership, guests, and management met on May 30 to draft a new strategic plan. The past several years have been challenging times for the Academy considering the presence of many competing organizations, declining membership in meeting associations, and shrinking vendor support. This new strategic plan provides an opportunity and framework for growth and development of the AACS for 2015-2018. All of our board members and committee chairs traveled to Chicago at their own expense and dedicated their weekend to creating goals and strategies that will lead our thinking and planning going forward.
Here is a look at our new mission statement, which I believe encapsulates our unchanging purpose and focus, followed by our identified goals and strategies.
The new AACS mission statement:
"To advance the multi-specialty, global discipline of cosmetic surgery and medicine for the benefit of patients and practitioners."
Four Strategic Goals:
  1. Member Value - Provide value and opportunity with inclusive and relevant member benefits.
  2. Education - Enhance and expand educational opportunities.
  3. Professional Presence - Increase the awareness of the Academy to the cosmetic surgery community.
  4. Sustainability - Strengthen the Academy through leadership and resource development.
To achieve our goals, we've identified the following, priority strategies:
  1. Member Value
    1. Increase member retention and acquisition by aligning benefits to needs.
    2. Review membership categories to reflect organization value.
    3. Facilitate opportunities for member engagement and leadership.
  2. Education
    1. Expand and refine educational opportunities.
    2. Develop experience-based curriculum.
    3. Create and update Best Practices Guidelines to be relevant resources for marketplace.
    4. Enhance mentoring opportunities.
  3. Professional Presence
    1. Provide robust representation to affiliated and like-minded organizations.
    2. Enhance all media platforms to more fully engage and connect members and educate and inform the public.
    3. Position the AACS as an authority through enhanced branding, messaging, and media.
    4. Collaborate with Allied Organizations for mutual representation and growth.
  4. Academy Sustainability
    1. Diversify revenue.
    2. Reinvigorate the Cosmetic Surgery Foundation.
    3. Review operational documents to ensure effective governance.
    4. Maximize use of technology for association functions.
    5. Align committees with strategic goals.
The AACS board of trustees, through the capable management and guidance from our association management staff and committee work, will identify metrics to monitor the progress of the strategies employed and provide all of our members with outcome assessments. I am very excited to present our membership with the strategies to accomplish our goals and ensure you that the board of trustees, committees, and the management staff are working in concert to advance the Academy's position in the cosmetic surgery and medicine marketplace. I want to thank all of the dedicated board members, committee chairs, and our management team for their unwavering commitment to the AACS mission. We should all be proud to be members of such an outstanding organization comprised of like-minded individuals who are committed to the advancement of the multi-disciplinary specialty of cosmetic surgery and medicine.
I hope all of you fathers had a Happy Father's Day and wish you all a safe and enjoyable Independence Day.
