Categories of Membership
Fellow
Fellow membership may be granted to any physician (MD or DO) who is a resident of the United States or Canada, who has performed at least one hundred (100) cosmetic surgery procedures as the independent surgeon during a two-year period prior to applying for membership and is scheduling cosmetic surgery patients in an accredited ambulatory center; accreditation may include, but is not limited to AAAHC, JCAHO, state-approved agencies and Medicare-approved facilities. A fellow must also be board certified in one of the following American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)-approved surgical subspecialty or other surgical specialty deemed equivalent by the AACS, including:
- Cosmetic Surgery
- Dermatology
- General Surgery
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Ophthalmology
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Otolaryngology
- Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
If an applicant has completed an AACS-approved training program and is certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS), then the applicant need only provide fifty (50) surgical cases. Fellows shall have full membership rights as recognized under customary parliamentary practice, including but not by way of limitation, the rights to attend membership meetings, to participate in discussion at such meetings, to vote, to be a candidate for elective office and to accept appointment to committees. Fellows shall be obligated to pay all dues and assessments imposed on Fellows pursuant to policy.
Note: Applicants not meeting these requirements should apply for Associate or Affiliate membership status.
Associate
Associate membership may be granted to any physician or oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is actively engaged on a regular basis in the performance of cosmetic surgery, but who does not meet Fellow member requirements. An Associate must be board certified or board eligible in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) approved subspecialty or other surgical specialty deemed equivalent by the AACS, including:
- Cosmetic Surgery
- Dermatology
- General Surgery
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Ophthalmology
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Otolaryngology
- Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Associates shall have all the rights of Fellows except they shall not have the right to vote and shall not be eligible to serve on the Board of Trustees or as an officer of the Academy. Associates shall be obligated to pay all dues and assessments imposed upon Associates pursuant to policy. Associate physicians who have completed three years as an Associate and meet Fellow requirements will be encouraged to upgrade to Fellow.
Affiliate
Affiliate membership may be granted to any physician who is actively engaged on a regular basis in the performance of cosmetic surgery, but who does not meet Fellow or Associate member requirements. This includes those physicians' whose original specialties fall outside the seven specialties listed above. Affiliate members' specialties may include Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, etc. Affiliate members shall not have the right to vote and shall not be eligible to serve on the Board of Trustees or as an officer of the Academy. Affiliates shall be obligated to pay all dues and assessments imposed upon Affiliates pursuant to policy.
International
International membership may be granted to any physician or oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is actively engaged on a regular basis in the performance of cosmetic surgery and resides in any country other than the United States or Canada. International members shall have all the membership rights of Fellows except they shall not have the right to vote and shall not be eligible to serve on the Board of Trustees or as an officer of the Academy. International members shall be obligated to pay all dues and assessments imposed on International members pursuant to policy.
Resident
Resident membership may be granted to any physician who is participating in residency or fellowship training and who has an interest in the field of cosmetic surgery. The only membership rights of the Resident shall be to receive notice of and to attend membership meetings and other functions conducted by the Academy. Residents shall not have the right to vote. Upon completion of their residency or training program they will be obligated to apply for an upgrade to either Associate or Fellow member status, prior to the next fiscal year.
Allied Health Membership
Allied Health membership may be granted to any persons engaged in the field of cosmetic surgery, in patient care, or in a technical or administrative capacity. Examples include: nurse practitioners, medical/physician assistants, estheticians, medical spa staff or other administrative staff. All candidates for membership must be referred by a physician who is on staff at their facility and is a current AACS member. Candidates are required to submit an application, physician referral letter, and dues payment in order to qualify. Affiliate members shall not have the right to vote and shall not be eligible to serve on the Board of Trustees or as an officer of the Academy. Allied Health members shall be obligated to pay all dues and assessments imposed on Allied Health members pursuant to policy.
