Education of Policy Makers about Cosmetic Surgery
Legislative The Academy has implemented a government relations program to advance the organization’s professional and policy goals. We recognize there are growing concerns about cosmetic surgery on the federal and state level e.g. patient safety concerns, the need for increased research on cosmetic procedures, medical spas, etc. As a result, the education of lawmakers will be broad based to cover each of these issues as well as providing basic information about the nature of the profession.
Our activity includes monitoring legislation on the state and federal levels that may be beneficial or detrimental to the Academy and its members’ patients. In addition, AACS is prepared to engage in issue-based campaigns on an as-needed basis. In particular, the Academy is conducting focused meetings with key members of Congress to differentiate between cosmetic and plastic surgeries a differentiate between cosmetic and plastic surgeries and establish a dialogue on issues related to the profession.
Regulatory
Future rulings by the Food and Drug Administration may dramatically impact the profession of cosmetic surgery. It is extremely important to monitor potential rulings from the FDA, such as those dealing with breast implants, new medicines or products that advance the industry.
AACS is now positioned to respond to issues by providing expert testimony, having members of the Academy talk about their practices, and meeting with the appropriate policy makers. Patient safety is critically linked to the FDA process as cosmetic surgeons advocate for their patients and ensure that procedures and products meet the highest standard quality of care.
It is critical that cosmetic surgeons engage in health policy to advocate for their patients and to ensure that the profession is understood.
