  Become a Fellowship Director

Whether you are a medical student, resident, or already in a medical practice, a career in cosmetic surgery can be yours. Cosmetic surgeons have an eye for beauty, and devote their practice to helping people achieve an aesthetic ideal.

Since there are no residency programs specifically dedicated to the entire realm of cosmetic surgery, practitioners must pursue their education through various other sources. While nearly every discipline in medicine has physicians that practice cosmetic surgery, some specialized training and experience is required.

Traditional routes to becoming a cosmetic surgeon include a residency in a surgical specialty such as dermatologic surgery, general surgery, plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery or otolaryngology, and at least one year of surgical experience. A physician may then choose to become board-certified in his/her original medical discipline while pursuing continuing medical education specifically in cosmetic surgery. This education may come in the form of a fellowship, through live surgery workshops, or attending scientific meetings, all of which are offered by the Academy.

Membership in AACS is a great way to gain exposure not only to possibilities in cosmetic surgery, but to the leaders in the field today. Events such as the AACS Annual Meeting and live surgery workshops offer panel discussions and small group settings to get to know your colleagues and learn from some of the top cosmetic surgeons. AACS offers a special Resident and Training Fellow membership, allowing you a chance to learn about cosmetic surgery and if it is right for you.

If you have any questions about a career in cosmetic surgery, we can help. Simply contact our office at 312.981.6760 to get a referral to a cosmetic surgeon in your area. Whether you are looking to speak with an experienced veteran of the field of a surgeon just starting out, AACS has them all.

AACS is committed to patient safety through physician education. We prepare guidelines for the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures to provide information to consider when contemplating various surgeries. The guidelines include information on the training and education necessary to perform surgery, surgical setting, standard pre- and post-operative care, potential complications and documentation of care. The guidelines are intended to present general information for educational purposes and are not intended to be used as a substitute for professional medical advice.
